My interest in evolution started when I first learned about it when I was 8 years old and has been reinforced by my lifelong interest in the natural world. While pursuing my degree in mathematics at UBC, I was very interested in biological applications of math and statistics to recent adaptation and evolution, particularly in the context of ecology and microbiology. I joined the Tokuriki Lab to pursue an empirical study of the evolution of proteins and bacteria. My current project focuses on the biodegradation of organophosphate pesticides, which has emerged in recent decades. Several unrelated enzymes and bacterial strains have evolved to degrade these pesticides, and my work focuses on these different proteins and their context within the host genome.
