My project involves probing the influence of evolution under static environments on within-population phenotypic diversity. I’m particularly interested in the evolution of functional diversity in genes that provide antibiotic resistance to bacteria. I use Metallo-β-lactamases as a model to explore how constant selection pressures can alter the functional characteristics of evolving populations, and thus, influence the evolutionary potential of the population, with a focus on elucidating sequence-function-host relationships, which can help us explain and predict the emergence, maintenance and dissemination of particular antibiotic resistance gene variants.
